Images from my desk

I have a drafting table for a desk. It currently stand at a height of 41in in the front and 43in in the back. I like the height because I prefer to stand while I work. I keep a cutting mat at the front right and a set of architectural plans turned upside down (for scrap paper, notes to myself and sketches) in the front left. In the rear are odds and ends (pens, pencils, erasers and cribbage boards to name a few). These are a few snapshots from my desk, or a kind of portrait of an extension of myself.

Ragnar Relay: Great River — My mapped legs

These are the three legs of the Great River Ragnar Relay that I'm running this coming Friday and Saturday.

If my math is somewhat close to being correct, after starting from Winona at 6:00am on Friday morning, my teammates will run a total of 4 hours and 13 minutes before I have my first leg of 8.2 miles.

After my first leg, which should take me approximately one hour and 6 minutes, my teammates will run for a combined total of 9 hours and 45 minutes (roughly) before I run my second leg of 6.2 miles. This second leg should take me 53 minutes to complete. At this point in the relay the time should be 10 pm and I'll have another 9 hours and 13 minutes before I have to run again.

My third and last leg will be 7 miles long and should take me an hour to complete it. My team, the Rock-N-Runners, should cross the finish line at 1:46 pm on Saturday with a total time of 31 hours and 46 minutes.

This is all based on estimated pace and will more than likely not be our actual finishing time.

The Amazing Benjamin Conant, World Traveller (Circa 2008, somewhere in CA)

Back in 2008 I went California to visit my friend Ben who was, at the time, studying in Humboldt. Today in 2011 Ben is in Egypt, still in school, and I was looking to practice my pen tool skills in Adobe Illustrator. This is the result. Enjoy Ben, everybody.

30 Days of Creativity: Day One

I started off my 30 days of creativity thinking about what being creative means to me. I decided that being creative can be spontaneous or planned, big or small, solo or cooperative, meaningful or trivial. Mary says that there is something about making yourself happy in creativity, although I think, coming from a designers point of view, creativity can be done not only for ones own happiness but also for the happiness of another or others.

The creative things I did today include constructing a model of the Eiffel Tower, creating a new pattern, and spelling my coworker's name in a new shipment of socks at the store where I work (pictured).

Ragnar Relay Great River

-1559053797

I'm running this with some people I met through the Running Room. Once school is finished I'll start seriously training. Right now my training is nearly nonexistent.
The race starts in Winona and ends in Minneapolis, (195 miles total split up between 12 people) and follows the Great River Road along side the Mississippi River. I can't wait.

I'm a Nerd, Foursquare told me so.

I've known about the Bookworm Badge for a while now but I just unlocked it today.
I just downloaded foursquare 3.0 today. If you haven't read about it yet here is a link to their blog entry from Tuesday about it. I've enjoyed playing foursquare ever since I started, back in (I think) June of 2009 (around the same time I lost my job at the architecture firm) and with the new updates in version 3.0 my interest has been brought to a new level.

10 Kilometers in the Snow

I brought my phone with me on my run today so I could use the Map My Run app to track my distance. While running I realized I could take a few pictures and share with everyone the amazing snow covered landscape I was trudging through. I started in Loring Park then ran through the sculpture garden, as I usually do, then headed out to Theodore Wirth Park by way of the North Cedar Lake Regional Trail, and back again. There were a few places that required high stepping through knee-high snow banks, and one stretch where I had to run in the road, but all in all it was a great 6.2 miles.

Its not spring yet

February has been long and deceptive but as I walk to work in a snowy sprinkle, wearing a coat made fore April I know I'm not the only one who has been duped. The kids who were playing with these scooters, I'm sure, want winter to stay away, and may also have lost faith in Groundhog Day.

New shoes, great run

I ran in my Mizuno Precision 11s today for the first time. They're light and responsive with the perfect amount of cushioning for my preference, as if they were designed after the winged sandals of Hermes. The run followed a 3.5 mile loop I'm fond of, which takes me through the Walker Sculpture Garden, into downtown on the North Cedar Lake Regional Trail then back home again. I decided to dress light, in tights and shorts and a long sleeve shirt, due to the air temperature hovering around 32 degrees. Now I can't wait to get out and use my shoes again. I think tomorrow I'll run to Theodore Wirth Park and back, which should be about 10 kilometers.
